Access to preserved benefits

Unless you have reached your compulsory retiring age and that age is not less than 55 your MilitarySuper Employer Benefit is generally not available to you.

Before age 55, in the few cases where a Member may have access to the Employer Benefit, it can only be paid as an indexed pension.

From age 55 onwards the Employer Benefit can be withdrawn from the MilitarySuper scheme and paid to a rollover Fund. It cannot be paid to you as a lump sum until:

  • you have reached age 60 and ceased employment; or
  • you have reached your preservation age and retired from the workforce.

You then also have the option of taking the benefit as part lump sum and part pension, providing you convert 50% or more of the lump sum to pension.

Between your compulsory retiring age and your preservation age you can access your Employer Benefit entirely as an indexed pension. From age 55 you can take part pension providing 50% or more is converted to pension, and preserve the balance for later payment as lump sum upon retirement from the workforce at preservation age.
