Information about the Medicare Levy Exemption

The Medicare Levy is currently 1.5% of your taxable income. However there are circumstances where you may be eligible for an exemption from paying the Medicare Levy, such as if you are the holder of a DVA Gold Card.

Eligibility for this exemption is usually worked out at the time you submit your annual tax return to the Tax Office, however, you can also apply to have this exemption applied on a fortnightly basis to your MilitarySuper pension.

Please note that you can only claim the Medicare Levy Exemption from your MilitarySuper pension if you are also claiming the Tax Free Threshold on this income source.

If you believe you are eligible for the exemption, and wish to claim it on your fortnightly MilitarySuper pension payment, please complete the Medicare Levy Variation Declaration form. We recommend you read the Instructions before claiming the exemption to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria.

Alternatively, please send us a copy of your DVA Gold Card and advise us in writing that you wish to apply for the exemption.
